Tibbo devices offer the ability to lock a unit to prevent accidental or malicious access. This holds true for both programmable and fixed-function devices. But, sometimes, some devices will be running for years without any need to adjust settings or perform an update and the password becomes misplaced.
There are ways to recover in the unfortunate event of a lost password. However, the process and result differ between fixed-function and programmable devices. Below, we will discuss in detail what options are available for each type of Tibbo device.
Fixed-Function Devices
For the fixed-function devices, the password protection is accessed via the device settings under DS Manager.
Once the password is set, access to settings, system initialization and uploading of firmware will all require entering of the correct password. This creates a problem since for security reasons, a device’s password can only be changed or disabled either by changing it or by initialization.
However, there’s a method called “Quick Initialization,” which can only be performed when there’s physical access to the Tibbo device itself.
To quick-initialize the DS:
- Make sure the DS is powered;
- Press and release the Setup button* to enter the serial programming mode. Status LEDs will play the serial programming mode pattern;
- Wait for at least three seconds;
- Press and hold the Setup button for at least three seconds- both status LEDs will be switched off and this will indicate that the initialization has been started;
- Initialization takes about one second to complete. Initialization result will be shown by the status LEDs- green LED will be switched on for about 2 seconds indicating successful initialization. (If the red LED is switched on this means that the DS is malfunctioning).
- Switch the DS off and back on again to exit the error mode if necessary.
Programmable Devices
Since programmable devices will run custom applications. Tibbo does not enforce a method of locking it at the application level. What is offered is to password-protect a device from accidental uploads through Device Explorer or TIDE.
Since password protection is just to prevent accidental uploads, we provide a way to bypass the password without having to initialize, or in other words, wipe the application from the device as the factory default state is without any application loaded.
If you don't remember the device's password, performing a device-related action in Device Explorer while holding the MD button pressed will bypass the password.
For example, keeping the MD button pressed and clicking on Set Password will clear the password and let you set a new one. If you don't press the MD button, you must enter the old password first.
